The Motivation Myth
Every new client tells me they need to 'get motivated.' I tell them the same thing every time: motivation is unreliable — build systems instead.
Why Motivation Fails
Motivation is an emotion. It peaks at the start of a new goal and crashes within 2–4 weeks when novelty wears off and reality sets in. If your training depends on feeling motivated, you will quit.
What Actually Works: Systems
A system removes the decision. When training is scheduled like a meeting — non-negotiable, same time, same day — it becomes automatic.
The 3 Pillars of Consistency
1. Identity Stop saying 'I'm trying to get fit.' Start saying 'I'm someone who trains.' Identity-based habits are far more durable than outcome-based ones.
2. Environment Pack your gym bag the night before. Sleep in your workout clothes if you train in the morning. Remove friction.
3. Minimum Viable Effort On low-energy days, commit to just 20 minutes. You'll almost always do more once you start. But even if you don't — you showed up.
Dealing With Missed Sessions
Missing one session is normal. Missing two in a row is the beginning of a habit. The rule: never miss twice.
The Long Game
Consistency over 2 years beats perfection for 3 months every single time. The goal is to still be training in 10 years — not to be perfect this month.
